Kangaroo Mother Care involves placing the baby vertically in skin-to-skin contact with the mother, father, or caregiver and ensuring optimal temperature. This, together with exclusive breastfeeding and early stimulation, is one of the most cost-effective strategies to prevent neonatal mortality or complications due to prematurity.
It is estimated that worldwide, 1 in 10 births is a premature child. In Guatemala, 17% of newborns have low birth weight.
UNICEF recently delivered in-hospital Kangaroo Mother Care kits to the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, distributed in 26 national hospitals to support premature and/or low-weight babies, guaranteeing a better start in life and better healthy conditions. The kits seek to continue strengthening the newborn care strategy in the country.
